Enzo Fernandez is becoming the Star Chelsea Need him to be
Thursday night's winner again demonstrated how the once maligned midfielder is proving a game-changing presence
There was a lot to love about the latest addition of Chelsea beat Spurs - The never ending Netflix Comedy Series.
The fist-pumping, vein bulging, voice losing atmosphere that increased in decibels from the moment Blue is The Colour was played over the speakers moments from kick-off. To the exemplary performance of Moises Caicedo, the standout candidate for the Mens’ Player of the Season. Or even the schadenfreude that followed Spurs disallowed goal, including Ange Postecoglou seeming to take aim at his own supporters.
Amongst all of the chaos, one calm head rose above most when needed to prove defining and claim arguably, the most important three points of Chelsea’s season.
Enzo Fernandez’s surge into the box on the 50th minute was the key to Chelsea breaking a flimsy Spurs backline and eventually proved enough to win the game. Fernandez’s header was his fifth goal in the Premier League this season, his second of significance against the bitter rival, and a growing sign of his transformation this season.
Whilst Fernandez will miss out to his midfield peer Caicedo for Player of The Season, if you threw up the supplemental award for “Most Improved” or “Proved Critics Wrong”, the Argentinian would probably come near the top.
It was 12 months ago when Mauricio Pochettino’s strong end to the season with a run of five straight wins that did not include Fernandez. The midfielder’s season was ended early due to a groin issue that had remained a nagging issue for most of the campagin.
